I've got a Mk1, how does the conversion differ from the Mk2 guide? |
|
Much of the Mk2 guide and the transmission section applies to the Mk1 but there are a few important differences. Firstly, the Mk1 drivers side engine mount will need modifying to suit the 20v block. In addition, to make room for the mk1 mount the cam belt auto adjustment must be junked and replaced with a manual one from a 16v, spaced away from the block by 8mm to account for the extra overhang of the 20v pulleys. Please note that this only applies to 1.5-1.8l cars. Smaller engined cars will need the bracket on the chassis leg to be changed for the 1.5-1.8l type first. Another option is to use the engine from a longitudinally mounted car (Audi A4,A6 or VW Passat) since the Mk1 engine mount will bolt straight on. However, since most of the ancillaries won't be suitable for transverse installation so it creates as many problems as it solves. If you need anymore details of what involved please contact us If you want to run the 02A box then you will also require custom side and rear mountings and 100mm driveshafts from a post ’89 1.8l Scirocco or Golf Convertible. The Mk1 1300 speedo cable will fit the 02A 'box. You can use the Seat mechanical clutch actuator as detailed in the transmission section but the area of the bulkhead where the cable emerges will need beefing up. Normally the best way to mount the shifter is to have it inside the car and run the cables under the console and through holes in the bulkhead.
